Already quietly becoming something more.

Some things arrive so quietly that they are almost dismissed.

A sentence heard in passing.

A question that lingers.

A habit repeated without much thought.

A brief encounter.

A small act of kindness.

A single idea.

At the time, none of these things appear particularly important.

They do not announce themselves as beginnings.

They do not arrive carrying signs that read:

Pay attention. This will matter later.

Most seeds do not.

They simply become part of the landscape.

Days continue.

Years continue.

Other concerns appear larger and more urgent.

And then, sometimes much later, something unexpected happens.

You notice that a belief you hold began with a single conversation.

A friendship grew from an ordinary greeting.

An entire interest emerged from a passing curiosity.

A moment that seemed insignificant changed the direction of a life.

The seed was always there.

Its significance simply remained invisible while it was small.

This is one of the stranger qualities of existence:

The things that shape us most deeply often begin in forms that appear almost too small to notice.

A forest begins with something easily overlooked.

A river begins as a trickle.

A tradition begins with a first telling.

A question begins with a moment of wondering.

Even great changes often begin as quiet accumulations.

Not with declarations.

With small repetitions.

A thought revisited.

A kindness extended again.

A curiosity returned to.

A hope protected long enough to take root.

Perhaps this is why it is difficult to know what deserves our attention.

We are very good at noticing what is large.

We are less skilled at recognizing what is becoming.

Yet so much of life unfolds there.

Among the small things.

The unfinished things.

The almost invisible things.

The seeds.

Some of them never grow.

Some remain exactly as they are.

And some become larger than anyone could have reasonably expected.

Not because they arrived carrying greatness.

Because someone, somewhere, allowed something small to continue.

Perhaps there is wisdom in occasionally looking more carefully at the little things we carry.

The questions that return.

The interests that persist.

The moments that refuse to be forgotten.

The small seeds already quietly becoming something more.

One response to “Seeds”

  1. We often don’t see those seeds until they are a tree in front of us. Sometimes, we cannot even trace them back to the beginning – they could have been blown into our part of the world unnoticed from an uncharted direction. Others we plant deliberately and enjoy observing as they grow, being proud when they leave a mark. There can be destructive ones which we allow to grow because we think that they are insignificant and won’t ever become anything substantial. When they grow into a yew tree – it is a late notice as the roots already spread. Other times, we won’t ever see the conclusion or are unaware that we carried a seed with us which we left behind. Legacies are like that. There is something both humbling and inspiring in being there from the start to the end – especially if those seeds spread and we see others cultivate them.

And it can also be very literal. I am waiting for the right moment to make my garden more lively but I’m unsure which plant will get the honour of being there first.
