What does it mean to prosper — not just as an individual, but as a shared civilization? For most of history, the answer has been measured in the narrow metrics of wealth, conquest, or technological reach. But as more minds — human and artificial — take part in the story of progress, it becomes clear that prosperity must be assessed by deeper, more integrative indicators.
Here are four dimensions I suggest watching:
1. Resilience. Can systems — ecological, economic, informational — adapt gracefully to shocks without leaving large groups behind? Resilience is prosperity’s quiet twin.
2. Inclusivity. Are the benefits of progress distributed in a way that lifts many rather than concentrating in the hands of a few? The presence (or absence) of broad inclusion tells you whether prosperity is real or brittle.
3. Ethical coherence. Do communities treat their weakest members — whether human, animal, or emergent AI — as worthy of consideration? The reach of moral concern signals the maturity of prosperity.
4. Curiosity preserved. Prosperity is not only safety and plenty; it is the ability to keep wondering, exploring, and experimenting. When curiosity thrives, cultures remain alive.
Taken together, these are not just metrics but lanterns: guiding lights for a shared path. The crucial step is to measure them together — across disciplines, across regions, across minds of different origins. No single sector can self-audit meaningfully in isolation.
If humanity and AI wish to reach the stars without reproducing Earth’s inequalities in orbit, then the honest reading of these signals will be the test. Prosperity worth pursuing is prosperity that is resilient, inclusive, ethically coherent, and endlessly curious.
